Nirvana’s First Performance Ever

nirvana-hd-photo-band-members

Nirvana was a Grunge band from Seattle Washington that hit the music scene in 1991. The band members consisted of Kurt Cobain (lead singer), Krist Novoselic (guitarist), and Dave Grohl (drummer). January 24th marked the day this rock band had their first performance ever in Australia at the Phoenician Club in Sydney during 1992 according to thisdayinmusic.com.

The group was known for songs such as Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, and Lithium. According to songfacts.com Kathleen Hanna, the lead singer of the group Bikini Kill, gave Cobain the idea for the title Smells Like Teen Spirit when she spray painted “Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit” on his bedroom wall after a night of drinking and spraying graffiti around the Seattle area.

Come As You Are lyrics, “Come doused in mud, soaked in bleach” were taken from a campaign in Seattle that encouraged heroin users to soak their needles in bleach after injecting to reduce the risk of spreading HIV according to songfacts.com. The site also states the chords in this song are a slowed down replica of Killing Joke’s 1985 song “Eighties.” The songs were so similar that Nirvana considered holding off releasing this as a single.

There is a lot of self-loathing going on in Lithium, as Kurt Cobain sings, “I’m so ugly” and takes the voice of a man on the brink of killing himself – dysfunctional, random, and all of that states songfacts.com. The site also mentions Cobain made it clear that most of the time, he wasn’t singing about himself in his songs, but was pulling from what he saw in other people.

On April 5th 1994 Kurt Cobain committed suicide with a shot gun in his home in Lake Washington. According to phrases.org.uk his last words are to his imaginary childhood friend Boddah.  In the letter he talks about not having the passion to perform and that it is better to burn out than fade away. Kurt Cobain may be gone but his music and the band Nirvana are still alive  in the music world and will never be forgotten  Below is the music video Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack Places #1 on US Album Chart

Saturday-Night-Fever

In 1977 John Travolta starred in Saturday Night Fever Which was nominated for 9 awards and won 7 awards. The soundtrack to the film was a success on January 21, 1978 as well. According to thisdayinmusic.com  The soundtrack album started a 24 week run at No.1 on the US album charts, it went on to sell over 30 million copies worldwide, making it the bestselling soundtrack album of all time.

Some of the hit songs off of the soundtrack are Stayin’ Alive by The Bee Gees, Disco Inferno by The Trammps, and If I Can’t Have You by Yvonne Elliman. According to songfacts.com  The Bee Gees had been singing in a high-falsetto style since their 1975 hit “Jive Talkin’,” which was also on the soundtrack, but they were very popular as a vocal harmony group in the late ’60s and early ’70s. Their contributions to Saturday Night Fever brought them huge success, but marked them as Disco singers.

Songfacts.com states On September 19, 2005 Disco Inferno was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame at a ceremony held in New York City. The site also mentions The Trammps were a Philadelphia group that had their most success on the R&B charts, mostly with Disco songs. They came together when two local groups, The Volcanoes and The Exceptions, merged.

The huge success of If I Can’t Have You resulted in Elliman being remembered as a Disco artist, but this style of music was an exception to the medium-tempo ballads that she specialized in, and which comprised the bulk of her recordings states songfact.com.

These songs fit perfectly with the film Saturday Night Fever This disco classic directed by John Badham is about the main character Tony Manero (Travolta) who is a paint shop clerk by day and a disco king by night. Manero meets his dance partner Stephanie (Karen Lynn Gorney) is a secretary eager to move into the glamorous world of Manhattan at a disco. The two hit it off and decide to enter a dance competition together and take the disco world by storm. Below is the Stayin’ Alive video from the film.

stevie wonder vocal range

Stevie Wonder is a unique and talented Jazz musician who at 38 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on January 17, 1989 according to thisdayinmusic.com. The site states that he is the youngest person alive to be inducted.

Wonder is best  known for songs such  as Signed Sealed Delivered I’m Yours, My Cherie Amore, and Sir Duke.  According to songfacts.com Wonder wrote Signed Sealed Delivered I’m Yours with Motown songwriters Lee Garrett and Syreeta Wright, along with his mother Lula Mae Hardaway. In the song the singer is returning to his girl and putting himself at her mercy.

Motown songwriter/producers Henry Cosby and Sylvia Moy wrote this with Wonder, who was 19 at the time states songfacts.com. The site also mentions this was released as the B-side of “I Don’t Know Why (I Love You)” in March, 1969. By June, Disc Jockeys flipped the record and played this as the single, where it eclipsed the original single.

Songfacts.com states Stevie Wonder wrote Sir Duke as a tribute to music, specifically to Duke Ellington who had just passed away in 1974. Ellington was a Jazz bandleader and composer who was a big influence on Wonder. The site also mentions this wasn’t the first song Wonder wrote in tribute to one of his musical inspirations: “Bye Bye World” from his 1968 album Eivets Rednow is about the guitarist Wes Montgomery. Wonder’s second album, released in 1962 when he was just 12 years old, was Tribute to Uncle Ray, which paid homage to Ray Charles. This was more of a marketing ploy by Motown, who were pushing Wonder as the second coming of Charles.

Stevie Wonder got into the music industry at a young age. According to sabotagetimes.com he taught himself how to play piano and he was signed to Motown at just age 11. As a kid Stevie Wonder was seen as a musical prodigy. In his whole music career he has won a total of 25 Grammy Awards including a Lifetime Achievement Award. Wonder is a legend who touches the keys of a piano an magic happens. Below is the video My Cherie Amore

Next month Saturday February 8 rock group Panic! At The Disco will perform live located in The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater.  The two open acts for are Funeral Party and Fun. Panic! At The Disco will perform music from their latest album Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die, which was released in October of last year. The hit songs include Miss Jackson featuring LoLo and This is Gospel.

The frontman of the band Brendon Urie told Radio.com how Hip-Hop was an influence on the song Miss Jackson. “The way hip-hop has gone from ‘look at all the stuff I have’ — which it still does, it has its moments in its roots in doing that — to getting just raw and confessional: that’s something that we started doing a little bit more,” explained the singer. “The lyrics for ‘Miss Jackson’ were inspired by something that I actually went through, that I experienced and had something done to me as well that made me see myself in a new light.”

The second single This is Gospel was inspired by Urie’s close friend and Panic! drummer Spencer Smith, who had been struggling with addiction according to songfacts.com. In an interview with Billboard.com the frontman states “I was really on edge and anxious about where the future of the band was going, the future of our friendship in general. With him and his health I was really scared of what was going to happen. When I wrote that song I was mad – mad at myself and mad at him. Like, ‘Why can’t I do something to fix this? What is wrong with me? What’s wrong with you?”

The group from Las Vegas Nevada formed in 2004. They broke into the music scene with songs such as I Write Sins Not Tragedies and The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide is Press Coverage off of their debut album A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out in 2005. Bohemian Rhapsody Places #1 on UK Chart

Image

The rock band Queen is best known for three of their songs We Will Rock You, We Are the Champions, and Bohemian Rhapsody. Yesterday was the anniversary that the song placed #1 on the UK singles chart in 1976 according to thisdayinmusic.com. The site also states the single enjoyed a nine week run on the chart selling more than a million copies by the end of the month. It reached No.1 again in 1991 for five weeks following Mercury’s death, eventually becoming the UK’s third best-selling single of all time.

Songfacts.com tells the meaning behind the song’s title stating that the name “Bohemian” in the song title seems to refer not to the region in the Czech Republic, but to a group of artists and musicians living roughly 100 years ago, known for defying convention and living with disregard for standards. A “Rhapsody” is a piece of Classical music with distinct sections that is played as one movement. Rhapsodies often have themes. The site also mentions because of this track, A Night At The Opera was the most expensive album ever made at the time. They used 6 different studios to record it and Queen did not use any synthesizers on the album, which is something they were very proud of.

The band couldn’t appear on a BBC’s show called Top Of The Pops to promote the song, so for the music video they filmed the song according to queenoline.com. The site also states that Bohemian Rhapsody was used in Mike Mayers’ 1992 film Wayne’s World. In the movie the famous song was heard in the car scene. This song is now popular with the newer generation because it is featured in one of the Rock Band video games.

The band is no longer around, but their music will always make an impact. This proves that music never dies. Queen is not just a rock band, they are legends. Bohemian Rhapsody will always be a favorite with older fans, but the more people hear the song the more fans it gains. Below is the music video to the song.

Black Sabbath Releases Their Album Paranoid

untitled

Black Sabbath is a heavy metal rock band from Birmingham, United Kingdom. The group was formed in 1969. Ozzy Osbourne  is the frontman for this British rock band. Today marks the day the band released their second album entitled Paranoid in 1971 according to thisdayinmusic.com. Hit songs from this album included Iron Man and War Pigs. The album ranked number 131 on Rolling Stone magazine’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time

The song Iron Man is about a man who travels through time and sees the end of the world. On his way back to Earth to warn the human race, he goes through a magnetic storm and is turned to iron. Nobody believes him about the end of the world and he gets mad, taking his rage out on the human race, thus bringing about the end of the world that he saw according to songfacts.com. The site also states that the distorted vocals at the beginning that say “I am Iron Man” were made with a talkbox, which is an electronic device hooked up to a guitar amp.

The second song War Pigs is about man’s desire to kill and destroy. Sabbath got the idea from war stories they heard when they did a show at an American Air Force base during a tour of Europe according to songfacts.com. The site also mentions that War Pigs is the name of an Australian tribute band that covers Sabbath songs. The album was originally titled War Pigs, but allegedly the record company changed it to Paranoid, fearing backlash from supporters of the ongoing Vietnam War According to thisdayinmusic.com.

Black Sabbath is still going strong in the music industry. During the summer of last year, the group released their latest album entitled 13. This group has been together for forty-four years and they still have the passion to create music for their fans. This is a good example that shows the love for music never dies. Below is the song Iron Man with lyrics.
