It’s My Party Reaches #1 In The US

When it comes to birthdays, there are two songs that come to mind the traditional Happy Birthday song and It’s My Party by Lesley Gore. The song reached #1 in the US today during 1963 according to This New York native recorded this song at the young age of 16 and it was produced by Quincy Jones.

It’s My Party is about a young girl whose birthday party doesn’t turn out the way she excepted it to. Her boyfriend arrives at the birthday, but leaves with another girl making the birthday girl want to cry.   This was Gore’s first single and only #1. She did have big hits with “She’s A Fool” and “You Don’t Own Me,” but her chart success tapered off in the mid-’60s and her last Top-40 was “California Nights” in 1967 according to

Lesley Gore was not the first artist to record a version of this song. states the first to record the song was Helen Shapiro, but her version was relegated to an album cut. The site also states that Quincy Jones heard this song on one of Gore’s demo tape and the pair agreed on recording it.

Lesley Gore came out with a comeback album in 2005 entitled Ever Since according to It’s My Party is such a big hit that recent generations sing Gore’s music out loud. She may not be performing now days but this song will never be forgotten. Below is the music video of It’s My Party.

Bob Dylan Inducted into Songwriter’s Hall of Fame

Bob Dylan is best known for his Folk-Rock style of music. On March 15, 1982 the singer was inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame at the 13th annual dinner held at the Hilton Hotel in New York City according to Some of the songs he is known for are Just Like  A Woman, It Ain’t Me Babe and Highway 61 Revisited

The song Just Like A Woman was on Bob Dylan’s Blonde On Blonde album that was released in 1966. According to it was allegedly inspired by Warhol factory pin up girl Edie Sedgwick  a pinup girl who appears in sleeve photos to Blonde On Blonde and died of a drug overdose in 1971. The lyrics of this song did not go over well with women. Joe Cocker, Manfred Mann, Rod Stewart and Richie Havens have all covered this states

It Ain’t Me Babe was on the album Another Side Of Bob. According to this was the legendary album which Dylan recorded in a single all-night studio session, aided by “a couple of bottles of Beaujolais.” The site also states Johnny Cash  covered this song with Dylan’s blessings for his album Orange Blossom Special.

The song Highway 61 Revisited received a Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002. The song was also placed 3rd on The Billboard 2000 during 1965. According to the crossroads of Highway 61 and Highway 49 is where Blues legend Robert Johnson reportedly sold his soul to the devil to become a renowned musician.

These songs prove that Bob Dylan is a true songwriter as well as a singer. He has been in the music industry for a long time and he shows no sign of slowing down. Dylan will be on tour staring in Japan on March 31. Below is a video performance of Highway 61 Revisited.

Katy Perry Prismatic Summer Tour

The summer time it not just going to the beach and having fun in the sun. For music lovers the summer is all about going to see their favorite artists live in concert. This Summer Katy Perry is hitting the road for her Prismatic tour. Her recent album Prism that was released last year features hit songs such as Roar, Dark horse, and Ghost.

According to the song Roar is a bouncy statement by Perry of moving forward into the next stage of her life after the tumultuous end of her marriage to Russell Brand. The site also mentions the song has hit #1 in 15 countries and entered the top 10 in 38 charts worldwide; it is easy to see why when looking at the fine songwriting craft on display.

Katy Perry recorded the song Dark Horse with rapper Juicy J.  The term “Dark Horse” is used to describe a person whose abilities or possible course of action are unknown, or to a somebody who reveals unsuspected talent states The site also mentions the earliest-known use of the phrase was in novelist and future Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli’s 1831 novel The Young Duke: A Moral Tale Through Gay.

Ghost is another song Prism about her failed marriage to Russell Brand. In the song the lyrics state: “We were best friends… now, you’re just a ghost.” According to this song mentions how carelessly the comedian brought up that he wanted a divorce from the songbird in a text message. The site also states when asked by the UK newspaper The Sunday Times how their breakup inspired her new album, the singer replied: “What I wanted to call this record at first was Adult Reality. Teenage Dream was me so high on that cotton-candy cloud, and then it’s like I got punched in the face and kicked down the stairs a couple of times.”

These are some of the songs she will perform live along with some of her older songs such as Hot n Cold, Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.), and many more. This is a concert no fan of Katy Perry should miss out on. Below are some reviews on along with the YouTube video of the song Roar.

WOW is the best way of expressing Katy Perrys concert this weekend in Fort Lauderdale. I had bought the tickets for my daughters 9th birthday, my boyfriend and myself. Not only did she love it, which I knew she would, but my boyfriend as well, which he was surprised about, since he is a Rock fan. She sang beautifully, her costumes were so colorful and playful, all around entertaining. – Yesy311-

My family’s first time seeing Katy, and she didn’t disappoint. Fun, energetic, and just what you would expect from Katy. She sang her big hits and a couple of the songs from her new Prism album. I heard this was her only official concert performance for 2013, and I’m so glad we’re able to go. She made us forever fans, and made sure that we’ll be fighting for tickets whenever she comes to town again.  – DadInLA-

I’ve been to about 20 concerts so far and this was by far the best, Katy constantly showed emotion and wasn’t afraid to show her true self. She was amazing. I’m a HUGE Katy Perry fan and hope someday i can have the chance to meet her. Do yourself a favor and just try to go to one of her concerts, you definitely won’t regret it. I never wanted it to end. – katykatlover123 –

Beastie Boys Reach #1 With Debut Album

Today in 1987 rap group Beastie Boys was the first group in this genre of music to reach #1 with their debut album Licensed To Ill according to the album included songs  such as (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party), No Sleep Till Brooklyn, and Brass Monkey.

According to (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party) got the Beastie Boys on MTV and exposed them to a huge audience, but they felt it was a novelty song not indicative of their work. They stopped performing it in 1987. The site also states the song was a radio hit before the video was made. MTV knew it would appeal to their core audience of young males, so they held a spot in hot rotation while the video was being made.

The song No Sleep Till Brooklyn and its video are a send-up of Heavy Metal music, playing up the ridiculous costumes, excessive hairspray and tendency for bands to take themselves just a tad too seriously in a very Spinal Tap way according to

Brass Monkey is about an alcoholic beverage. Brass Monkey is rum, vodka, and orange juice mixed over ice. Very popular with college kids trying to get drunk according to The site also states the track for this song was based on a sample of “Bring It Here” by Wild Sugar.

This rap group will always be part of music history. They also paved the way for future rap artists like Eminem. Beastie Boys‘ rap music is not like the rap music heard on the radio today that consists of violence and cursing. Their rhymes are clean and still well known by music lovers who may not be a big fan of rap. Below is the music video  (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party).
