Blondie at Orpheum Theater

Blondie_2

Yesterday in 1979 marked the day when the group Blondie performed at Orpheum Theater in Memphis, Tennessee according to thisdayinmusic.com. The American-Rock band became popular in the New Wave and Punk scene during the mid-1970. Blondie is known for songs such as Heart Of Glass, Call Me, and One Way Or Another.

The song Heart Of Glass was on the groups Parallel Lines album which was released in 1978. Songfacts.com states Blondie members Debbie Harry and Chris Stein (who were later married) wrote the first version of this song in early 1974, shortly after they first met. This song is also on The American Idol video game. The site states Blondie re-recorded this in 1978 in a Reggae style, but their producer Mike Chapman suggested Reggae didn’t sell in America. As Harry and Stein had a fascination with the Disco sound that was then sweeping the country, so they adopted a sound that was an amalgamation of their New Wave background and Euro disco.

Call Me was recorded on the American Gigolo Soundtrack that was released in 1980. European Disco producer Giorgio Moroder wrote this with Blondie lead singer Debbie Harry, who thus song was covered by Franz Ferdinand in 2009. It also covered by a heavy metal rock band called In This Moment during 2008.

One Way Or Another was another song recorded to the group’s Parallel Lines album. According to songfacts.com this song is about a stalker. The lyrics are very dark and go into detail about a guy with evil intentions, but the music is very light and catchy, which masked the meaning of the song. The song is featured in a few movies such as Coyote Ugly (2000), Seed of Chucky (2004), and Mean Girls (2004).

The music from this group has been around for many generations to listen to and enjoy. Blondie’s music may not be like today’s Rock, but that is what makes it so unique and standout from the rest. Below is the performance of One Way Or Another.

The Who Are Recording A New Album And Touring

who_pic_21.tif

The British rock The Who said farewell to their fans in 1982. The band got back together several times to do reunion concerts. The group is coming together once more to record a new album and to put together a 50th anniversary tour according to msn.com. The band will hit the road in North America sometime next year after touring around England.

The Who is also heading back to the recording studio to cut a brand new album since they release the last studio album Endless Wire that went on store shelves in 2006. Msn.com states that lead singer Pete Townshend reveals that the sound of the new album will be prog rock than pub rock. The band is known for songs such as Pinball Wizard, My Generation, and We’re Not Gonna Take It.

Pinball Wizard was recorded on the album Tommy which was released in 1969. This song ranked number 10 on US charts. According to songfacts.com Townshend wrote it when he found out influential UK rock critic Nik Cohn was coming to review the project. Townshend knew Cohn was a pinball fanatic, so he put this together to ensure a good review.

The song My Generation was on the song titled album and it was released in 1965. Songfacts.com states this featured one of the first bass solos in Rock history. John Entwistle used a new-on-the-market Danelectro bass to play it, but he kept breaking strings trying to record it. A bit of a bummer that replacement strings weren’t available, as he had to go out and buy an entire new bass.

We’re Not Gonna Take It is another song off of the Tommy album. According to songfacts.com the song is about Tommy’s followers revolting against him, because they feel they are jealous of Tommy and they feel they are being exploited by Tommy’s family. The site also states the message of this song is “we’re not gonna take fascism”

The 2014 World Cup will soon come to a close and a team will be declared champion. This year Latin diva Shakira will perform at the closing according to msn.com. She will perform her single La La La (Brazil 2014) featuring Brazilian musician Carlinhos Brown. This song is off of the Latin diva’s latest tenth album which is self-titled.

The song on the album was originally called Dare (La La La), but Shakira reworked it especially for the World Cup states songfact.com. This is the third time she will perform for the sporting event. She also put on a show for the World Cup in 2006 and 2010. According to songfact.com she performed Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) with South African Afro-fusion.

According to msn.com She has been flying the flag for the World Cup since the competition began last month (Jun14), asking soccer fans to show their support for the event by taking a “flag-based selfie” and then sharing them online using the tag #daretodream. This is what got Shakira the opportunity to perform for the World Cup this year. She gave this statement about performing:

“I have an intricate relationship with football for obvious reasons, and I truly understand what the World Cup means to so many people, myself included,” the singer said in a statement. “The fans have shown the most incredible support for this song and I can’t wait to perform it for them,”

The singer was hoping that her native team Colombia would advance, but they lost to the hosting team Brazil. It always entertaining when sports and music come together this way there is something for everyone to watch. Below is the video La La La (Brazil 2014).
